How to Reach the Mdina Cathedral Museum

Mdina is one of Malta’s most accessible heritage sites, and visitors have several options to get there. Below is guidance for reaching the Cathedral Museum via bus, taxi, or private car.

By Bus / Public Transport

Mdina is served by many bus routes connecting it with Valletta, Rabat, Sliema, and other localities.

From Valletta, you can catch Route 50, which takes approximately 29 minutes.

Other routes that stop near Mdina or Rabat include: 51, 52, 53, 56, 109, 181, 182, 186, 201, 202.

The main bus stop is just outside the Mdina Gate (often called “Mdina” stop) or in Rabat / Saqqajja.

Once you arrive at Mdina Gate or Saqqajja, it’s typically a short walk to the Cathedral Museum.

Tips:
Use the Malta Public Transport Journey Planner to check the most up-to-date routes and timetables.

During peak tourist times, buses may be more crowded — arrive early if possible.

By Taxi / Ride-Share

Taxis and ride-share services (e.g., Bolt & Uber) can drop you off near the Mdina Gate or close to the main pedestrian access.

Note: inside the narrow streets of Mdina, cars are not permitted apart from those with special permits or for drop-off/pick-up only.

Ask the driver to drop you off at Villegaignon Street corner with Mesquita Street or just outside the main gate, both are within a few metres of the central square.

Typical fares vary based on starting point — it’s best to check with the taxi company or app ahead of time.

By Private Car / Parking

Driving into Mdina itself is generally not allowed for visitors. Parking inside the walled city is reserved only for residents with permits and for emergency vehicles.

However, there are several parking options nearby:

  1. Large car park ~200 meters from Mdina Gate (beside the Rabat bus terminus).
  2. Small car park just outside Mdina Gate (playground area) — limited spaces.
  3. Parking under Mdina’s fortifications via narrow tunnel — limited and may require familiarity with the route.
  4. Parking in the nearby town of Rabat, then walking or taking a short shuttle / taxi into Mdina.

On busy days (weekends, holidays), parking demand is high — arriving early or using public transport is advisable.

Suggested Visitor Route & Notes

  • A typical arrangement is: busMdina Gate drop-offwalk to Cathedral Museum.
  • Always leave extra time for walking through Mdina’s pedestrian alleys, and consider that some streets are steep or uneven.
  • Use map apps or ask locals if you need guidance inside the old city.
